The Beneifts of Vacations

Death Valley 083Summer time always reminds us of vacations, either taking one or remember one longingly.  There are many studies supporting the benefits of vacation such as:  Living longer, being happier, improving sleep, improving productivity and solving problems.  When I look at this list of benefits, you know what I think of, YOGA.  I love vacations, and wish I had more time to take some long needed time off.  While our studio is coming up to speed and that long needed vacation is near in sight, I take mini Yoga vacations by just grabbing my mat.  I begin my mini Yoga vacation with Supta Baddha Konasana (Reclined Bound Angle Pose) and immediately my body starts to relax.  This simple pose begins to lower my Sympathetic Nervous System (the fight/flight response system) from the high gear of running a studio, and my Parasympathetic Nervous System (rest/digest response system) begins to improve my immune system, improve digestion and help with a more restful sleep.  This follows by a Yang practice to awaken my body and some Yin poses to open those deep soft tissues and muscles.   I end my mini Yoga vacation with a big smile on my face in Savasana (Corpse Pose) with a quiet mind, body and spirit.  So while you are between vacations your mini Yoga vacation can keep that vacation smile on your face.

Yoga in the Summer

Over the years, I have noticed yoga classes thin out during the summer months. Although I realize people tend to be active outdoors and travel more during the summer months I still find it a bit puzzling. I am not pondering over this because I want my own studio to be more packed. I am thinking about this because, for me, if I love something and I realize all the benefits of it, I don’t want to give it up, not even for a few days. Like most, I love to be outdoors and tend to travel more during the summer, but that is also why I need Yoga during these months. Take mountain biking for example, if you fall off of your bike at high speed, having a stronger and more flexible body along with greater mental alertness can help you avoid serious injury. We know this all too well here in California, the earthquake capital of the world. Here buildings are built to flex to prevent structural damage. In addition to avoiding injuries Yoga can enhance your performance, my husband noticed a dramatic improvement in his rock climbing after he began to practice Yoga. As for travel, since Yoga can strengthen my immune system, I get ready for a trip with some Yoga days ahead. After being in the car or airplane for hours, I like nothing more than some good Yoga to stretch out my body so that I feel human again. This is the long way of me saying, Yoga is good for you all year round. Even if you can’t make it to the studio to practice, please take care of your body, mind and spirit by keeping Yoga close to you.

Om Alliance

There are very few original ideas in the world and my Om Alliance idea is no exception.  The idea of an Om Alliance came to me about eight years ago when I was on a flight heading to Europe for a business trip.  I was sitting in a Lufthansa operated plane when the ticket was booked through United Airlines.  I thought this was such a wonderful and smart idea, airlines partnering to expand their service reach at the same time keeping the needs of their customers a priority.  Then I thought, while looking at the five yoga studio key tags hanging on my key ring, why can’t the same idea be applied to Yoga.  I would love to have just one key tag or class package allowing access to multiple Yoga studios.   Eight years later, the world has not changed that much.  Although I now have a Yoga studio of my own, I still love the idea of one class package allowing students access to partnering studios.  Studios can focus on what they do best instead of trying to be all things to all people.  At the same time, students can enjoy their favorite classes without having to buy five different Yoga packages.  I have reached out to a few Yoga studios sharing this idea and I am sending this idea out to the world hoping it will manifest.  Please help spread the word if you love the Om Alliance idea.

Why White?

IMG_1364-AC - CopyA student recently asked why I like white yoga tops, if you know me you wouldn’t be surprised by the answer.  You see, I am a pretty practical person, so you wouldn’t catch me in anything uncomfortable, being comfortable is my thing!  Nor would you find many decorative things in my house requiring dusting, simple is beautiful.  So why white?  Because it makes me feel a bit like superman and at the same time practical.  In the past I often dash from high-tech meetings into teaching yoga.  Throw a jacket and scarf over my white yoga top and black pants instantly turns me into a super high-tech woman.  Taking off the jacket turns me into super yoga teacher.  This is the closest I have come in feeling like superman.  Also, who can’t use another white top during the summer?  The white takes me from yoga to lunch or even Los Gatos’ Music in the Park.  Now that is practical!  There you have it, nothing complicated, just simply white. hosting information .

Gratitude

GratitudeIt has been five months since my husband Louis and I opened our studio in downtown Campbell, we love the location we have chosen more today than when we first laid eyes on it.  During one of the many evenings we spent getting the space ready, we stood in the middle of the studio and watched the room light up as the moon rose into the sky.  At that moment we realized this is no longer just a space for us, the studio now has a personality, a heart and a very sweet soul.  Since that evening the studio continues to blossom, making new friends and transforming lives each day as students come and practice with us.  What the students do not realize is that they have transformed my life more so than I have theirs.  Having spent over 20 years in the high tech industry, traveling from country to country, I finally get to build something that means so much to me.  Please accept my most sincere Thanks. hosting information

The Yoga Studio is Coming Soon

As most of my family and friends know, I have been talking about opening my own studio for the last six years.  As soon as I took steps in securing the business name and URL I found out I was pregnant with Bo.  Motherhood and being a working professional have kept my life busy and put my yoga studio dream on hold until this 2010.  This year has been perfect for turning The Yoga Studio into a reality since Bo is turning five and started Kindergarten.

 

Yoga is a big part of my life and has helped me win my battle against my chronic Rheumatoid Arthritis, staying grounded through job transitions and riding through life changes.  In the past decade as a yoga teacher, I have enjoyed watching my students transform themselves through regular Yoga practice.  I also noticed many studios have shifted their emphasis from teaching yoga as a discipline that connects and transforms the body, mind and spirit to a form of exercise.  It has become more and more challenging to find a yoga studio that offers a modern, beautiful and serene facility to practice the traditional art of Yoga.  It was from the joy of teaching and the desire to build a beautiful place to share the practice of traditional Yoga that fueled my desire to open The Yoga Studio.
